Glynn Roberts

Essex Boot Camp Cofounder, Managing Director

Glynn Roberts
  • Reps qualified
  • First Aid trained
  • Attended Chelmsford College for 2 years completing the Public Services Course
  • 5 years as a Royal Marine Commando

Experience

In 2000 Glynn joined the Royal Marines. He successfully completed the arduous 30 weeks training program, the toughest (physically and mentally) task he has ever faced, to become a fully active member of the Royal Marines Commandos.

Additional Qualifications

Glynn has experienced all types of physical stresses, through Commando training completing the famous 30 miler over Dartmoor, to the Tough Guy challenge and intensive weight training. These experiences have given Glynn a solid insight into the body’s limits. With a vast background in group and Personal Training, a variety of which include Marine recruits, Professional Football Clubs, Police head quarters and schools, Glynn maintains the belief that it is very important to keep your training challenging, fresh and enjoyable, that way your body never gets stuck into a routine.

About Glynn

Glynn spends much of his time motivating and training others to achieve their goals, whatever that maybe. Getting people outside in the fresh air and understanding that there are better, more enjoyable ways to train other than the gym, is his ambition. His spare time is spent training himself, he is a big believer in 'practice what you preach'.

Why we love Glynn

Glynn co-founded Essex Boot Camp in 2006 with a vision to create a leading outdoor exercise experience, to cater for all fitness levels. With a military background, the Royal Marines Commandos is one of the UKs toughest physical tests to pass and be accepted into. It’s the toughest for a reason as the Royal Marines are some of the fittest people in the world, and that’s purely down to the training they go through. Starting a ‘Boot Camp’ was the obvious answer to Glynn, “Essex Boot Camp brings together a range of exercises from military inspired circuits, using Mother Nature’s gym (logs, hills etc), all the while having a good time and meeting some great characters”.

Why Glynn loves Essex Boot Camp

“Put very simply, Essex Boot Camp ticks all the boxes for the perfect solution to achieve results.  Varied training, experienced instructors and training that is fun but very affective.  Super fit or super unfit our training will cater for you”.

“We both loved it, as when you’re pushed you feel you have really achieved something. I couldn’t believe the hour was up so quickly and it was great to be out in the fresh air. No matter how bad I was I never felt like I was left behind so that’s a testament to Glynn, and how good a good physical trainer he is”

Mairead Samwell Quote after she took her trial session.

Essex Boot Camp is an ideal solution to deliver this exercise, in group sessions. Currently less that 2% of the UK population exercises on a regular basis and after 9 years of experience in the fitness industry, James feels strongly about changing this trend.

Why we love James

James has the passion and the drive to really help you achieve your fitness goals. His personal goal is to show people how fun exercise can be and this is largely because his friendly and personable approach and attitude. His partnership with Glynn is the perfect balance and that’s why over 90% of the trialists, become fully fledged Essex Boot Campers. In his spare time, James is keeping abreast of fitness trends and techniques, cementing Essex Boot Camps reputation as number 1 in the county.

Why James loves Essex Boot Camp

“What we are striving to achieve at Essex Boot Camp on a daily basis is a strong alternative to what is currently on the market. Its military work-outs mixed with specific accepted training methods, making our product very appealing to the public. Gone are the days of working out in a stuffy class or gym, our members are encouraged to embrace the elements. Now more than ever people are leaving gyms, looking for something different, varied and dynamic and that is exactly what they get at one of our sessions. I still get a buzz from instructing at Essex Boot Camp, it’s as fresh for me as it was back in 2006. The principle is still very much the same, seeing people have fun, socialise and get in seriously good shape all at the same time, in the biggest gym of all, the great out doors”.

Robb McGeary

Maldon and Witham Lead Instructor

Robb McGeary
  • Reps Level 3 & First Aid trained
  • Gym Jones First Degree Instructor
  • Extreme Kettlebell & Olympic Weightlifting Instructor

Experience

Robb first started training at 14 as a sprinter for Braintree A.C. Since then he has experienced many different forms of training which lead him to become a Personal Trainer 4 years ago. He has worked with a variety of clients including tri-athletes, Golf pros, stay at home parents and weekend warriors. Robb has spent the last 4 years learning how to get creative with bodyweight exercises and this is something he implements in his own training as well as his clients.

Additional Qualifications

Robb qualified as an advanced gym instructor with YMCA and has since gone on to gain extra qualifications in Kettlebells, Boxing and Olympic Lifting as well as some valuable experience by training with world renowned coaches and ex-champions in these fields. Last year Robb attended the first UK certification run by the infamous Gym Jones team, well known for their hardcore methods and for whipping the 300 actors into shape. It was on this course that Robb truly discovered his dark side!

About Robb

Robb loves most sports related fields and stays active in Olympic lifting and sprinting. He has since taken up coaching at his old club which might see a return to competing if he can find his spandex singlet! He attends various seminars throughout the year to further his education and is a big fan of pre-1950s strength and bodyweight training. Outside of this, Robb can be found watching 300 on repeat, preaching conspiracy theories and busting out the moves in his band.

Why we love Robb

Robb is big believer in getting people up and moving in an outdoors environment. Having witnessed and experienced ill health and poor results from working in an indoor “health” club, Robb knows the importance and benefits of training outside with a motivated group of people and encourages his clients to do the same. Robb loves to get creative with his bodyweight training and has recently introduced the infamous “Bronco” Burpee to the EBC members.

Why Robb loves Essex Boot Camp

In this day and age it is more important than ever for people to work on their health & fitness and get outdoors. Essex Boot Camp is a driving force in this movement and having seen how their members are motivated to give 100% and always leave with a smile on their face, I am happy to now be a part of the team. An outdoors environment allows you to get truly creative and experience new ways of training, and by adding the support and camaraderie of a group of like minded people you are guaranteed to never get bored. It’s time to realise that this is the most fun and effective way to train to experience true radiant health & fitness, and leave behind those who rely on treadmills and powerplates. How will they exercise when the power runs out?

Dave Calvert

Rayleigh Lead Instructor

Dave Calvert
  • Reps Level 2
  • 5 years Royal Navy gunner
  • Former Firefighter

Experience

We first met Dave at the Southend & Leigh Essex Boot Camp sites where he started training as a client in 2010. Dave used the EBC principles to full effect by losing a massive 6 stone over a 6 month period through intense, dynamic exercise with a moderated diet.
Dave impressed us with his level of fitness by smashing our minimum entry levels requirements for our instructors proving the effectiveness of our training approach. Dave went on to gain his recognised instructor qualifications and joined us on probation as an Instructor in 2011.
Dave regularly participates in half marathons and off-road events and now manages our newest site at his hometown of Rayleigh.

Additional Qualifications

Dave is a great example of what can be achieved through hard work and a dedicated training regime and understands how hard those first steps can be for anyone who’s out of condition. Having been there himself, Dave uses his own experiences of weight loss and high impact training to support, guide and motivate clients to help them achieve their goals and often surpass their own expectations.

About Dave

Dave left school to become a gunner in the Royal Navy during which time he served on destroyers in the Gulf, the Med and northern Europe. After 5 years, Dave left the Navy to become a Fire fighter before then going on to become a specialist fire consultant.
Dave became motivated in outdoor fitness as one of our clients and has been encouraged to take his skills to the next level by joining us as an instructor, proving that at Essex Bootcamp, if you bring the right attitude we can help you change your life.

Why we love Dave

Dave’s military background and his varied experience leads to some varied and very original sessions at Rayleigh. Having seen Essex Bootcamp as both a member as well as an instructor, he’s well placed to make sure all new members quickly learn the ropes and start to feel part of the team.

Why Dave loves Essex Boot Camp

“I never really enjoyed the chains of gyms, although I love sport. Essex Bootcamp helped me to visualise that there are more effective and fun ways of burning calories with outdoor workouts using the parks and streets that are all around us. The support and motivation you get from the other members and friendships you make along the way helps to keep you improving all year long”.

Why we love Aaron

When Aaron came to us, he instantly showed that he had huge potential as an EBC instructor. He further proved him self at one of our day camps, where is fitness levels were high and the way he interacted with all the members was fantastic. Since then his sessions have got excellent feed back for fun and variety.

Adam Ferrier
  • Reps level 2 and First Aid trained
  • Semi-pro Rugby player
  • CRB Checked
  • Attended Writtle college for 2 years studying sports science

Experience

Adam is a semi-professional rugby player currently playing for Southend Rugby Club. Adam has played for Essex, South East England, Southend, Bedford Blues and even playing in the u20's 6 nations for Scotland playing his debut against France.

Adam also attempted to complete the world’s toughest military training for the royal marines but wasn’t man enough and had to leave due to injury. Adam has had firsthand experience as a boot camp victim loosing over a stone and reaching fitness levels he never thought he could reach.

Additional Qualifications

Adam understands what it takes to reach goals and training hard. Adams likes to add variety to workouts keeping each session challenging and coming away with a sense of achievement. Adam has an excellent personality and believes in people feeling good about themselves and therefor will motivate and praise you to achieve this result (praise comes at a hefty price)!!

About Adam

Adam was introduced to us by originally becoming a member. We trained Adam to drop some weight and get the physical and mental attitude to peruse a career in the Royal Marines. Unfortunately a bad injury cut his time short, so a change of direction was needed. Having got to know Adam during sessions and seeing his keenness to give 100% whilst smiling, we knew that if the Marines would accept him – so could we.

Why we love Adam

‘Fezza’ as he is known has instantly become a valued part of the team. He knows Essex Boot Camp inside and out having been a member. Then bringing his Semi-pro Rugby team spirit and Marine attitude to his sessions, he is full of surprises (and the odd pie)

Why Adam loves Essex Boot Camp

Welcome to the sweet outdoors!! Running round a lush green field, wind blowing through your hair (apart from Paul Newman), doing press up's till your arms fall off, leopard crawling through puddles, flipping tyres, log runs, fireman carries all goes on whether the sun is shining or snow is falling this is why I love Essex Bootcamp!

Experience

Paul has over 15 year’s experience of teaching groups and individuals. He has an extensive background in fighting systems including Judo and Boxing, enabling him to bring yet another dimension to Essex Boot Camp training sessions. In fact, you may be interested to know that Paul started off as an Essex Boot Camp member, participating in the classes for over 4 years.

Addtional Qualifications

As detailed above, Paul has lots of qualifications. He has an excellent personality and attitude and together with his first hand experience as an Essex Boot Camp member, giving him a well rounded approach.

About Paul

Paul is certainly one of our true success stories who is now a highly professional instructor with a motivational manor. Surprising, Paul has a keen interest in beers and curry’s, but thanks’ to Essex Boot Camp, you would never know.

Why we love Paul

His excellent sense of humor (especially on those rainy days) really motivates the members, ensuring they reach their maximum and achieve their goals, whilst having fun.

Why Paul loves Essex Boot Camp

“Unless they're hardened weight trainers, most gym frequenters follow a familiar pattern. A little bit of treadmill time, some weights and maybe the cross trainer. All of this with no supervision and no motivation to push beyond a pre-determined comfort zone. It's little wonder that attendance drops off as the year goes on. I started outdoor training over four years ago and have no desire at all to return to a gym. For the average person, everything you need to get fit and lose weight can be found outdoors. Everyday objects you may have walked past suddenly turn into an exercise tool! You simply cannot replicate the feeling Essex Boot Camp training gives you within the confines of a gym. Give it a go and you'll soon see what I mean!”

He has since discovered MMA (combat jujitsu) and is up to the orange belt. John loves training and keeping fit and also enjoys raising money for charity, recently competing in a boxing bout and raising over £6,000 for Help for Heroes.

Why we love John

John loves training in the elements, rain and dirt, rocky and humid, hills and mud. He is a strong believer that training in all types of weather and environments, really does test the body and push it to its maximum.

Why John loves Essex Boot Camp

“I love Essex Boot Camp because it’s real training not for the faint hearted, no matter what level of conditioning you are at you will be pushed to your own personal limit. Whilst training in a gym, you can become complacent with your training, wondering around from machine to machine doing your 3 sets of ten and seeing no significant difference in body shape or fitness level. At Essex Boot Camp your fitness levels and strength are tested and nothing remains the same. You are pushed and motivated to get the most out of that hour and the benefits of this kind of training is immense. The first place to come if you truly want to reach your goals, is Essex Boot Camp”
